Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, Inc. (NYSE: VRX) (TSX: VRX) (“Valeant” or the “Company”) has announced that, pursuant to a recommendation by its Patient Access and Pricing Committee, the company will make available to all hospitals in the United States an enhanced rebate program to reduce the price of Nitropress and Isuprel.

Under the enhanced program, all hospitals are eligible for a rebate of at least 10%, with rebates totaling 20%, 30% or 40% based on volume purchased during a calendar quarter for hospitals that purchase large volumes of the relevant drug. Hospitals will receive these discounts primarily through their group purchasing organization (GPO). Hospitals that don’t buy drugs through a GPO can access the program by contacting Valeant customer service. The rebate program is effective immediately, with hospitals receiving rebates after the end of the quarter in which the purchases were made. The Patient Access and Pricing Committee also confirmed that there would be no further price increases for these products or reductions to the discount levels in the rebate program.

“Under this new program, the discounts we previously implemented for Nitropress and Isuprel will be simplified and more accessible,” said Joseph Papa, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Valeant. “I understand the concerns our partners in the health care community have had about the pricing of these drugs, and we want to ensure hospitals and patients can get the drugs they need.

“I also want to thank the Senate Committee on Aging and the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform for the attention they have brought to this issue, and specifically to gaps they identified in the previous program,” Papa continued. “We are committed to getting this right.”

TELUS invests $1 million to bring wireless service to Highway 1 and Highway 8 between Spences Bridge, Spatsum and Dot

As part of a strategic partnership with the Province, TELUS has invested $1 million to build a new wireless site along Highway 1, bringing wireless service to approximately 16 kilometers of Highway 1 between Spences Bridge and Spatsum, and 10 kilometres of Highway 8 between Spences Bridge and Dot. The site is now live, and also provides coverage to the community of Spences Bridge and the Cook’s Ferry Indian Band.

“This investment brings wireless service to Spences Bridge and the Cook’s Ferry Indian Band for the first time, which means residents in the area can now connect with family and friends when they’re at home or on the go with their mobile devices, ” said Bert Braybrook, TELUS General Manager for Kamloops/Kootenays. “Bringing wireless services to this stretch of highway also enhances the safety of travel for residents and visitors by providing access to 911 in the event of an emergency, while also bringing much-anticipated new coverage to nearby communities.”

The project is part of the 10-year Connecting British Columbia Agreement TELUS signed with the Province of B.C. in 2011. Under the terms of the agreement TELUS will invest to connect more than 1,700 kilometres of unconnected highways with wireless service.

“Today, people want to be able to stay connected while on the road. Expanded wireless service helps meet that desire for people travelling in the area and residents alike,” said Jackie Tegart, MLA for Fraser-Nicola. “TELUS’ new coverage will also improve public safety for anyone who needs to contact emergency services along these stretches of highway.”

Last month, TELUS announced a commitment to invest $4.5 billion in British Columbia through 2019 to extend fibre optic infrastructure directly to thousands of homes and businesses in rural and urban communities, further strengthen wireless service, and support key services including healthcare and education with new technologies. By the end of 2019 TELUS will have invested more than $51 billion in British Columbia since 2000.

Telesat Procures Two Prototype Satellites for Global Ka-band Low Earth Orbit Constellation

Telesat, a leading global satellite operator, has procured two prototype Ka-band satellites for operation in low earth orbit (LEO) that Telesat anticipates launching mid-to-late 2017 as part of a test and validation phase for an advanced, global LEO satellite constellation that Telesat is developing. Through an authorization issued by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), Telesat has secured priority rights to certain Ka-band spectrum in non-geostationary orbits (NGSO) at the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to operate such a constellation.

Telesat has contracted with Space Systems Loral (SSL) of Palo Alto, California, and Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL), an independent British company within the Airbus Defence & Space group, for the procurement of the prototypes. By drawing on the advanced technologies and expertise of these leading manufacturers, Telesat will test and demonstrate two distinct spacecraft in LEO, a key step in optimizing the design and performance of Telesat’s contemplated LEO constellation.

“Telesat is proud of our long and distinguished record of satellite innovation, including technical breakthroughs that have enabled our customers to realize significant gains in broadband performance,” said Dave Wendling, Telesat’s Chief Technical Officer. “Our Anik F2 satellite was the first to provide Ka-band high throughput satellite capacity. We are now developing a global constellation of advanced, high throughput LEO satellites operating in Ka-band, which we believe will offer a number of important advantages for the global delivery of high capacity broadband services. The Telesat team looks forward to working with SSL and SSTL to validate and demonstrate key parameters of our contemplated next generation satellite network as well as with other technology partners as we move forward with our plans.”
